Top 5 Tips for Maximizing Small Outdoor Spaces

Nothing is better than having a cozy outdoor space to enjoy a glass of wine, read a book, entertain friends...the options are endless. I live for the summer and plan on spending as much time as I can on our patio soaking in this weather before fall. One thing our patio shares with many other city condos is its small size. Smaller outdoor spaces can be tricky to design which can lead many to not do much with them.

I’m sharing our patio design and some tips to help you make the most of your space. These tips will help your space feel larger and more functional. And they apply to any outdoor space but become even more important when designing a small space.

TOP 5 TIPS TO MAXIMIZE A SMALL OUTDOOR SPACE

1. Designate Zones

Like any interior space you would design, think about how you want to use the space and then divide it into sections accordingly. Designate areas for grilling, relaxing, eating, etc. Creating separate zones in a small space not only helps it looks bigger, but gives purpose and function which become key when space is limited. I recommend using products that can be folded or stacked to save on space and provide flexible use for multiple sections.

Our patio is long and narrow somewhat limiting furniture options. We needed space to lounge and entertain, grill, and room for toddler toys as well. And it’s our only outdoor space so it needed to be multi-functional. I achieved this by creating two zones and getting creative with furniture. I planned for one end to be the main seating area for relaxing and entertaining and the other be the grill section with additional flexible seating and open space for kiddos to play.

To help differentiate zones, I love adding patio tiles and rugs. We used these patio tiles over the less attractive concrete. They instantly upgraded the space making it feel much “homier”. They were so easy to install (just click in) and are weather-resistant making them easy to clean since they’re plastic. We use our Swifter to give them a quick clean.

This is one end of our patio. The other end looks the exact same - it’s one long, narrow space!

2. Incorporate Seating

Patios are an extension of our homes and adequate seating gives a welcoming feel providing an area to entertain and relax. Great seating is crucial in any outdoor space but becomes even more important in a small space.

For our patio, a key priority was a sofa that comfortably sat 3 people despite the deck’s narrowness. I wanted a cozy space for conversation which meant the seating couldn’t face the brick wall. I found this option which we set up as a sectional nestled perfectly into the corner. The white cushions are removable and machine washable. They come perfectly clean with some OxiClean, or you could leave them on and use this upholstery cleaning machine. I also invested in these sofa covers.

We love to entertain so we wanted additional seating that was flexible and didn’t take up much space. We achieved this using 2 stackable chairs set up at the opposite end near the grill with an end table between them as an additional seating area. We move these chairs and end table over to the sectional end when we have guests.

3. Create a Focal Point

Focal points draw your eye to a specific area and add interest. Think about what spot/s will be viewed most either as you enter your patio or as you’re sitting to add decor, lighting, and plants.

I left space behind our sectional to add woven basket decor and flower pots to add life and frame the space.

I also added a large woven piece above the grill to serve as focal point when sitting on the sofa.

4. Add Lighting

Lighting makes such a difference in making a space cozy and inviting. String lighting, lanterns, or even outdoor table lamps create a homey vibe and make summer evenings more enjoyable.

One of my favorite items we use are these table-top tiki torches. The herringbone detail is so pretty and they give off the perfect light at night.

String lights are a must and add so much charm.

5. Don’t Forget Plants

Attach planter boxes to your railing, add plant stands or large pots, and don’t forget to use the walls when space is very limited! You can find gorgeous planters at any budget. And they add so much life to any space!
