ORC WEEK 3: Paint & Molding

Week 2: Wallpaper & More!

Week 3 of the One Room Challenge was all about paint and beginning to install the wainscoting.

Here’s what I accomplished this week:

  • Painted 2 coats on walls - this may be changing!

  • Painted chair rails

  • Cut & installed chair rails

  • Ordered wallpaper

  • Scheduled wallpaper install - I am hiring this out!

  • Ordered mirror

PAINT

When I selected the wallpaper, I wanted a bright white to provide contrast and play off of the florals. Our builder told us the door and baseboards were Extra White by Sherwin Williams so I went ahead and painted the lower portion of the wall with 2 coats in Satin finish (their version of eggshell) before applying the chair rail and moldings. Easy right? Well, it is most definitely not the same color. So, I will have to paint those which I hadn’t planned on.

I’m still undecided if the wainscoting will remain a shade of white or if I will pull a different accent color from the wallpaper. Going to wait until wallpaper is up to see what I am feeling!

I had also painted 2 coats of the same color in a semi-gloss finish on the rail and moldings before hanging them. Luckily this didn’t take too much time as I will now be changing the color.

I purchased these primed to make my job easier! That way once hung, I can caulk, fill the nail holes, and then touch up the moldings as needed.

MOLDING

We purchased this chair rail and picture frame molding from Home Depot. Because our baseboard is a bit more substantial and clean-lined, I wanted the rail and molding to be fairly simple and these did the job.

This was my first time installing molding myself and I kind of love it - the planning, measuring, leveling, nailing, etc. I got as far as the chair rail this week and am finishing installing the picture frame molding next week!

MIRROR

I am on the hunt for a gold mirror and have ordered one that leans modern that I really like. Also still stalking FB Marketplace for the perfect vintage mirror. I had my eye on an amazing one that sold but I have hope!

Week 4 To Do’s:

  • Install picture frame molding

  • Caulk, fill and paint molding

  • Wallpaper installation - yay!

  • Decide on paint color for wainscoting

  • Source & order vanity light

  • Mirror - obsessively refresh FB Marketplace in search of a vintage mirror!
